He decided it was time to end the show immediately, to make a statement to everyone watching. He suddenly shifted his immense weight, his back foot digging incredibly hard into the red vinyl of the mat, squealing in protest. The casual, arrogant posture vanished in a terrifying, explosive instant, replaced by raw, violent intent. He attacked. For a man of his immense, hulking size, Decker's movement was shockingly, unnaturally fast. He didn't plod forward; he surged like a derailed freight train engine. One powerful, ground-eating step closed half the remaining distance between them. Then another step, his footwork surprisingly crisp and aggressively sharp. He didn't lead with a probing jab to measure distance or a cautious grappling attempt to tie her up. He went for an immediate, catastrophic, highlight-reel finish. His right leg chambered with the speed of a coiled spring and snapped upward with terrifying, explosive speed. It was a high, sweeping roundhouse kick, aimed directly at the side of Maya's head. The mechanics of the strike were flawless, honed by thousands of repetitions on heavy bags. His hips turned over completely, and all two hundred and thirty pounds of his body weight were channeled seamlessly into the thick rubber sole of his combat boot as it rocketed through the air. The velocity was lethal.Along the walls, several observing soldiers instinctively flinched, their bodies physically leaning away from the sheer violence of the motion. From their perspective, the geometry of the situation made evasion entirely impossible. The heavy boot was already there, a deadly blur of olive drab and black rubber, mere inches away from her face.Chapter Seven: The Ghost on the MatLogic, physics, and sheer probability dictated that Maya should have been rendered instantly unconscious. She was supposed to take the hit, perhaps try desperately to block it with her forearms, which would have shattered her guard and still resulted in her being violently knocked off her feet by the sheer kinetic force transfer. But logic failed on the red mat that day.
