For one terrifying, completely silent second, Decker was completely out of control. His broad back was fully exposed to her. He was off-balance, incredibly vulnerable, and completely open to a devastating, fight-ending counter-attack. A swift, driving kick to the back of the knee to tear the ligaments, a vicious shove to the spine to send him crashing face-first into the concrete floor, a lightning-fast rear naked chokehold—she had a dozen highly trained ways to end the fight right then and there.Decker panicked. Survival instincts overrode his arrogance. He wildly planted his kicking foot back onto the mat, his boot squealing sharply and loudly against the vinyl as he desperately fought his own momentum. He spun his massive frame around to face the threat, throwing his arms up blindly, bracing himself for the inevitable, crushing impact of her counter-strike.But when he finally managed to turn around, panting and wide-eyed... nothing happened.Maya was standing exactly three feet away from him. She was already facing him, her posture perfectly aligned, her breathing still remarkably slow and measured. Her hands were still up in that flawless, impenetrable defensive position. She hadn't attacked him. She hadn't moved to exploit his glaring mistake. By consciously choosing not to strike him when he was utterly helpless, she had delivered a psychological blow far more devastating and humiliating than any physical punch could ever be.Chapter Nine: A Clash of StylesThe grand illusion of a quick, easy, highlight-reel victory had shattered into a million jagged pieces, leaving behind the cold, harsh, exhausting reality of a genuine fight. The second exchange began, but the entire tempo and atmospheric pressure of the room had drastically changed.Decker approached again, but his steps were now heavily measured, cautious, and flat-footed. He was no longer trying to intimidate her with a primate display of size; he was trying to solve a complex, incredibly dangerous puzzle. He probed her defenses tentatively, snapping a quick, heavy jab toward her face just to gauge her reaction speed.Maya effortlessly parried it, her forearm lightly and precisely tapping the inside of his wrist, redirecting the heavy blow harmlessly over her shoulder. She barely moved her feet, pivoting on a dime.
