The officer took a step toward him.
The man remained where he was.
“I have every right to document what is happening here.”
A few people in the crowd exchanged nervous looks.
The older woman looked at the phone.
For the first time, her expression changed.
She realized something.
Someone had finally captured what was happening.
The officer looked around.
His confidence began to disappear.
“Everybody go back inside,” he ordered.
Nobody moved.
The woman crossed her arms.
“No.”
The officer looked directly at her.
“I gave you an order.”
“And I asked you a question,” she replied.
“What question?”
“Why are you here?”
Silence.
The officer didn't answer immediately.
The man recording continued to hold his phone steady.
The camera captured everything.
The officer's face.
The woman's expression.
The crowd.
And, most importantly, the patrol car parked behind them.
The older woman pointed toward it.
“You came here because someone made a complaint, didn't you?”
The officer said nothing.
“Then tell everyone what the complaint was.”
Still nothing.
The man with the phone spoke.
“That's what I thought.”
The officer turned toward him.
“You seem very interested in this situation.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
The man lowered his phone slightly.
“Because I know how this works.”
The officer frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means people believe whoever has the uniform.”
The crowd became completely silent.
The man continued.
“But a uniform doesn't automatically make someone right.”
The officer's expression hardened.
“You're interfering with an investigation.”
“No,” the man replied.
“I'm documenting one.”
The older woman looked at him with gratitude.
Then the sound of another vehicle approaching could be heard in the distance.
Everyone turned.
A second police vehicle slowly entered the neighborhood.
The officer looked toward it.
His expression suddenly changed.
The second vehicle stopped near the curb.
Another officer stepped out.
He was older.
Calmer.
And unlike the first officer, he immediately looked at the people instead of the officer who had called him.
“What happened?” he asked.
The first officer quickly approached him.
“There's a disturbance. This woman refused to cooperate, and this man is interfering.”
The older officer looked toward the woman.
“Ma'am, can you tell me what happened?”
Before she could answer, the first officer interrupted.
“She has been causing problems since I arrived.”
The older officer raised one hand.
“Let her speak.”
The first officer stopped.
The woman took a breath.
