"We have to show this to Lena," Hannah said, reaching for her phone. "She can get federal investigators to trace the architectural stamps on this blueprint."

Caleb grabbed her wrist gently, shaking his head. He typed rapidly on his phone and showed her the screen: NO FEDS YET. IF VICTOR WAS JUST THE ACCOUNTANT, THE REAL ARCHITECT COULD HAVE PEOPLE INSIDE LAW ENFORCEMENT. WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT BEFORE WE EXPOSE IT.

"Then who do we trust?" Hannah asked, her heart pounding.

Caleb looked at the blueprint, his eyes tracing the intricate, load-bearing support columns and the specialized ventilation systems. He recognized the drafting style. It was old-school, meticulous, and brilliant.

"We don't need a cop," Caleb signed, his eyes narrowing with a fierce, tactical focus. "We need a structural engineer. I know exactly who designed this nightmare. And I know where to find him."

"Tell me about this engineer," Hannah said, keeping her voice low as the car crossed the Williamsburg Bridge.

Caleb pulled out a tablet and brought up a digitized file from his architectural studies. He signed in the dim light of the backseat: "His name is Arthur Vance. He was a legendary underground architect in the 80s and 90s. He specialized in designing subterranean vaults for high-end clientsโ€”banks, private art collectors, and... less legitimate organizations."

"The mafia," Hannah translated quietly.

"Yes," Caleb confirmed. "He disappeared from the public record twenty years ago. Rumor was that he went into hiding because he knew too many structural secrets about the city's elite. But if you look at the stress-distribution patterns on my mother's blueprint, it is undeniably Vance's signature style."

"How do you know where to find a man who has been hiding for twenty years?" Hannah asked.

Caleb offered a grim smile. "Because a man who builds vaults never truly stops building. He just builds deeper."

The sedan pulled to a stop in a desolate, heavily industrialized sector of Queens. Massive, rusted shipping containers were stacked like steel monoliths in the shadows of a defunct power plant.

Caleb and Hannah stepped out into the freezing wind, flanked by the silent security driver. They walked toward an unassuming, heavily fortified metal door set into the brick wall of an old switching station.

Caleb didn't knock. He approached the electronic keypad beside the door and quickly dismantled the plastic housing. He pulled a specialized bridging tool from his jacket, bypassing the primary circuit, and hotwired the locking mechanism.

The heavy steel door hissed open.

They stepped into a dimly lit, concrete corridor that sloped downward into the earth. The air smelled of ozone and stale coffee. At the bottom of the ramp, they entered a sprawling, subterranean workshop filled with massive server racks, drafting tables, and structural models of New Yorkโ€™s underground transit systems.

Sitting in a worn leather chair, staring at a bank of glowing monitors, was an older man with wild, silver hair and a thick, unkempt beard. He held a soldering iron in one hand and a half-empty bottle of bourbon in the other.
