The timer on Elena’s tablet ticked down to zero.

"Executing the transfer now," Elena whispered in the back of the van. She hit the enter key. "The Trojan is in the system. The locks are dead. Go."

The East River was freezing, the black water churning violently against the concrete pylons of the decommissioned dry dock. Caleb, Dominic, and the tactical team moved silently through the shadows, utilizing the deafening roar of the wind to mask their approach.

Caleb led them to a heavy, rusted iron grate semi-submerged in the freezing water. It was the drainage culvert he had identified on the blueprints.

Dominic and Luca attached heavy hydraulic spreaders to the iron bars. With a muted, metallic groan, the ancient steel snapped, creating an opening just large enough for a man to slip through.

They crawled through the slime-coated concrete pipe, the smell of stagnant water and ozone suffocating in the enclosed space. Caleb checked the glowing screen on his forearm. They were directly beneath the primary holding sector.

They emerged into a dimly lit, subterranean maintenance corridor. The heavy steel security door at the end of the hall, which should have been locked by a biometric scanner, stood slightly ajar. Elena’s malware had done its job.

Caleb signed rapidly to his father. "The holding cells are down the left corridor. Julian's command center is on the upper gantry."

Dominic nodded, signaling his men. "Luca, take two men and secure the gantry. Neutralize anyone with a weapon. Caleb, you are with me. We find Hannah."

They moved like phantoms through the sprawling, underground fortress. The facility was a horrifying monument to Gideon’s shadow network—rows of server racks, weapon caches, and fortified interrogation rooms.

Two of Julian’s mercenaries rounded the corner, armed with suppressed assault rifles. They didn't have time to raise their weapons. Dominic moved with brutal, terrifying speed, firing two suppressed shots that dropped both men instantly to the concrete floor.

Caleb sprinted past the bodies, his eyes scanning the numbers stenciled onto the heavy steel doors.

Cell 4. Cell 5.

He stopped at Cell 7. The electronic keypad was sparking faintly, the locking mechanism disengaged by the malware. Caleb didn't hesitate. He hauled the heavy steel door open.

Hannah was sitting on the floor, her knees pulled to her chest. When the door opened, she flinched, expecting Julian’s executioner. But when she looked up and saw Caleb standing in the doorway, the sheer, profound relief that washed over her face was heartbreaking.

Caleb dropped to his knees, pulling a combat knife from his vest to slice through the thick industrial zip-ties binding her wrists.

Hannah let out a ragged sob, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his tactical vest. The romantic love they had shared was dead, shattered by the cruel reality of their blood, but the profound, human connection—the shared trauma and the desperate need to survive—remained absolute.

Caleb held her tightly, closing his eyes, a single tear slipping down his cheek. He signed against her back, a gesture she could feel: "I've got you. You are safe."
