"Clear!" the lead operative whispered over the comms.
Alexander and Elena walked into the living room. It was empty. The closets were stripped bare. The safe in the study was open and empty.
"He's gone," Alexander sighed, running a hand through his hair. "He took Hannah and ran."
"No," Elena said, her eyes locking onto a small detail on the kitchen table. She walked over and picked up a single, handwritten note left beside a half-empty cup of coffee.
I knew you would find out eventually. I am not running from you, Elena. I am running to finish what I started. Meet me where it all began.

Elena stared at the note. "Where it all began."
"Bridge House," Alexander realized, his blood running cold. "He went back to the community center."
Elena didn't wait for the tactical team. She pushed open the heavy front doors and walked directly into the main atrium. Alexander was right behind her, his hand resting near his concealed sidearm.
The atrium was illuminated only by the faint glow of the emergency exit signs. Standing in the center of the room, beneath the magnificent mural Elena Vale had commissioned years ago, was Daniel Mercer.
He didn't look like a terrified fugitive. He looked like a man who had finally accepted his execution.
"Hello, Elena," Daniel signed slowly, his hands trembling slightly, but his gaze steady.
Elena didn't sign back. She stepped forward, her dark eyes blazing with an apocalyptic, unyielding wrath. "You erased Margaret's statement. You let my sister drive into an ambush. You built the shadow network for Gideon Sterling. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't let Marcus put a bullet in your head right now."
Daniel swallowed hard. He didn't deny the accusations. He didn't beg for his life.
"Because I didn't erase the statement to protect Gideon," Daniel signed, his movements heavy with decades of guilt. "I erased it to protect Margaret. And to protect you."
Alexander frowned, stepping beside Elena. "What are you talking about?"
"Gideon knew Margaret was going to the authorities," Daniel signed rapidly. "He had already dispatched a hit squad to eliminate her. I intercepted the order. I told Gideon I would handle the 'loose end.' I took Margaret's statement, and I helped her disappear into the convent in Quebec. I faked her death to save her life."
"And my sister?" Elena screamed, her voice echoing violently through the empty hall. "Did you save her?"
Daniel fell to his knees on the polished floor, tears streaming down his face. "I tried," he signed, sobbing silently. "I tried to warn her. But Julian Croftβs men got to her first. I arrived at the crash site five minutes too late. I pulled her out of the burning car, Elena. I was the one who pulled her out."

The revelation hit Elena like a physical blow. She staggered backward, the air completely leaving her lungs. "You... you pulled her out?"
