Chapter 1 – The Farmer's Broken Combine

$50 doesn't buy much anymore, but in a small town it can buy a front-row seat to a man's humiliation. Trent Larson believed that was exactly what the evening would be. He expected an easy opponent, an old local farmer who would step into the ring, take a few punches, and become a story everyone could laugh about the next morning.

Elijah “Big Eli” Washington had other things on his mind. Under the harsh yellow light of the barn, he stared at his large, dark hands. The skin around his knuckles was blackened from years of grease and work. A rough scar crossed the back of his left thumb. He smelled of burnt wiring and old diesel—the smell of a combine harvester that had finally given up.

Eli was sixty-four. His farm was depending on a machine that had stopped working at precisely the wrong time. Repairing it would take money he did not have. The harvest could not wait, and neither could the bills.

When the offer of quick money reached him, Eli did not see a boxing ring. He saw a repaired combine, a field that could still be harvested, and another season that might be saved.

That was why he listened.

The people around the ring saw an elderly farmer. Trent saw a heavy bag with a pulse. Neither understood that Eli had spent a lifetime learning how to stand his ground.
