Chapter 5 – The Old Man Steps Into the Ring

Eli climbed into the ring without changing into flashy fight clothes. His old boots remained on his feet.

The sight drew another round of laughter.

Trent bounced lightly in front of him. He wanted Eli to see the difference in speed and athleticism. Eli did not respond.

Instead, he looked at the floor.

He looked at the ropes.

Then he looked at Trent.

The bell had not yet sounded, but Eli had already begun preparing.

There was something about his stillness that several people in the crowd found unsettling. He did not look like someone who expected to lose. He looked like someone who had already accepted whatever happened next.

The announcer explained the rules one final time.

Three minutes.

That was the deal.

When the bell finally rang, Trent moved forward immediately.
