Tore out the hidden storage room.

Replaced the old security system.

The blue mats stayed.

So did the cage.

Emily stood outside the building on reopening day.

Miller beside her.

“You sure?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“People who say they’re completely sure are usually lying.”

Emily smiled.

The new gym had rules posted near the entrance.

No unsanctioned bouts.

Independent medical oversight.

Anonymous athlete-reporting system.

Automatic suspension for threats or retaliation.

Counseling resources.

Miller read everything twice.

Jake approached.

“Sergeant.”

“Jake.”

“We have a problem.”

Miller sighed.

“Already?”

Jake smiled.

“We need someone to teach defensive movement twice a month.”

“No.”

“You didn’t let me finish.”

“No.”

Emily crossed her arms.

“You’d be good.”

Miller looked betrayed.

“You’re supposed to be on my side.”

“I am.”

Jake continued:

“No macho nonsense. No beating up young guys. Just control, balance, de-escalation.”

Miller frowned.

“That sounds suspiciously reasonable.”

“So?”

Miller looked around.

The fighters who once laughed at him were there.

Several looked embarrassed.

One approached.

“Sergeant, about that day…”

Miller raised a hand.

“You laughed.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I survived.”

The young man blinked.

Miller added:

“Don’t make me listen to an apology speech.”

Everyone laughed.

This time Miller did too.

Emily walked toward the center mat.

She stopped at the exact place where Dustin had stood mocking her father.

For months, she had avoided mirrors because bruises made her remember his voice.

Today she looked around the gym.

Nothing happened.

No panic.

No shaking.

Just memory.

Different from fear.

Miller stood beside her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

And she meant it.

Then Jake handed Miller a pair of focus mitts.

“Ten minutes?”

Miller sighed.

“Ten.”

Three hours later, he was still teaching.

Emily watched from the wall.

Not because she needed protection.

Because for the first time, she enjoyed seeing her father become something other than angry on her behalf.

Then a detective arrived.

Miller noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

The detective looked at Emily.

“We found Luis Ortega’s missing phone.”

The room quieted.

“There’s a video.”

“Of what?”

The detective’s expression hardened.

“Dustin on the roof with him.”

👉 The last piece of evidence could turn Dustin’s case from kidnapping and assault into murder.

Chapter 16 - Luis Ortega’s Last Video

Luis had activated his phone camera without Dustin noticing.

The video was shaky.

Windy.

A parking structure at night.

Dustin stood several feet away.

Luis’s voice:

“I’m not signing anything.”

Dustin:

“You’re making this harder.”
