“You went to the gym.”

“I said I would.”

“You promised no fighting.”

“I didn’t fight.”

She stared.

“Not even once?”

“Dustin tried something.”

“Dad.”

“I moved.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“That somehow sounds worse.”

Miller sat beside her.

“Someone tried to get into your room.”

Her humor disappeared.

“Who?”

“Security didn’t catch him.”

She looked frightened.

Miller noticed.

“Emily.”

“I know who it might be.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“Judge Peter Lawson.”

Miller stared.

“A judge?”

“He came to the gym sometimes.”

“For fights?”

“No. Private meetings.”

“With Nolan?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of meetings?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily looked toward the door.

“Dustin once told me Nolan could make anything disappear because Lawson owed him.”

Miller’s expression hardened.

“What did Lawson look like?”

“Tall. Gray hair. Gold glasses.”

Miller stepped into the hall.

“Camera footage.”

Security brought it up.

The man who had tried to enter Emily’s room wore a baseball cap.

But when he looked toward the elevator camera—

Gray hair.

Gold-framed glasses.

Miller photographed the screen.

Then called the detective.

The response came quickly.

“Do not approach Lawson.”

Miller frowned.

“Why?”

“He’s sitting circuit court.”

“I know what a judge is.”

“He also has connections.”

“So?”

“So we need evidence before we touch him.”

Miller looked through the glass at his daughter.

“You already have attempted unauthorized entry into a witness’s hospital room.”

“Not enough to establish why.”

Miller hated the answer.

But he knew the detective was right.

Evidence.

Not anger.

Again.

Emily called him back inside.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”

“What?”

“Dustin was arrested before.”

“For hitting someone?”

She nodded.

“His ex-girlfriend.”

“What happened?”

“Charges disappeared.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Name?”

“Rachel Bowen.”

Miller wrote it down.

Emily continued.

“She moved to Wisconsin.”

“You know where?”

“No.”

Miller called a former Marine who worked private investigations.

Twenty minutes later he had an address.

Rachel Bowen lived outside Milwaukee.

Miller stood.

Emily groaned.

“You’re leaving again.”

“For two hours.”

“You’re sixty-five.”

“I’ve been sixty-five all month.”

“Dad.”

Miller softened.

“I’m not chasing a fighter.”

“What are you chasing?”

“The first woman they made disappear.”

👉 Rachel Bowen had kept every photograph, every threatening message—and one voicemail recorded Judge Lawson promising Dustin he would “take care of the girl.”

Rachel opened the door only after Miller showed his ID and explained why he was there.

She was twenty-nine.
