Nolan stopped talking.
So did Dustin.
Miller stood outside while detectives processed the room.
Jake leaned beside him.
“I should’ve said something.”
Miller looked at him.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Jake stared at the floor.
“They threatened my little brother.”
Miller said nothing.
Jake continued.
“Evan’s eighteen. Wrestles in college. Nolan said accidents happen.”
“You believed him.”
“I watched what happened to Tyler.”
Miller nodded.
Fear made sense.
That didn’t make silence harmless.
But Miller knew something about frightened young men.
Shame rarely made them braver.
He asked:
“You ready to talk now?”
Jake nodded.
“Everything.”
“Then start.”
Jake told police the whole structure.
Nolan arranged private fights for wealthy gamblers.
Some were genuine.
Some fixed.
Dustin acted as enforcer.
Fighters who refused lost gym access.
Sponsorships disappeared.
Threats followed.
Tyler resisted.
Emily found the financial records by accident.
That made her dangerous.
One detective asked Jake:
“Did Nolan order Dustin to assault Emily?”
Jake hesitated.
“I heard him say she needed to understand consequences.”
Miller’s face tightened.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
The detective wrote it down.
Dustin shouted from across the gym:
“He’s lying!”
Jake turned.
“No.”
His voice shook.
Then strengthened.
“I’m finally not.”
Dustin struggled against the officer holding him.
“You think that old man’s going to protect you?”
Jake looked toward Miller.
“No.”
Then he looked back at Dustin.
“I think the truth will.”
Miller almost smiled.
Then his phone rang.
Hospital.
His heart stopped for half a second.
“Hello?”
A nurse spoke quickly.
Emily was awake.
Stable.
But police officers had found someone attempting to enter her room using a fake visitor badge.
Miller’s voice went cold.
“Who?”
“We don’t know. Security stopped him. He ran.”
Miller looked at Coach Nolan.
Nolan looked away.
The gym suddenly felt irrelevant.
Dustin was in custody.
Nolan was surrounded by police.
But someone else was still working for them.
Miller headed for the door.
Jake followed.
“Sergeant?”
Miller turned.
Jake said:
“Nolan has a partner.”
“Who?”
“I never knew his name.”
“What do you know?”
Jake’s face tightened.
“He’s the one who handles cops, doctors, and judges.”
👉 The man who tried to reach Emily at the hospital wasn’t another fighter—he was someone powerful enough to make complaints against Dustin disappear.
Chapter 7 - The Man in the Hospital Hall
Miller reached St. Mary’s twenty-three minutes later.
Two officers stood outside Emily’s room.
He entered.
She was awake.
Angry.
“Dad.”
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You look angry.”
