“Emily.”

She closed her eyes.

“Please don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“Become Dad.”

He understood exactly what she meant.

Not the father who made pancakes.

The other one.

The man who had spent thirty years teaching soldiers how not to panic when violence arrived.

Miller leaned forward.

“I’m not going anywhere until you tell me.”

Emily’s lower lip trembled.

Finally:

“Dustin.”

Miller didn’t move.

“What did he do?”

“We argued.”

“About?”

She hesitated.

“The gym.”

“What about the gym?”

Emily looked toward the door.

“Dad, you need to promise you won’t go there.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“I’m not promising something I already know I won’t keep.”

Despite everything, she almost smiled.

Then pain crossed her face.

Miller noticed.

Every tiny movement.

Emily whispered:

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Videos.”

“Of Dustin?”

“Of fights.”

Miller frowned.

“He’s an MMA fighter.”

“Not those fights.”

She explained.

Dustin and Coach Nolan had been organizing private after-hours bouts.

No sanctioning.

No medical supervision.

Heavy cash betting.

Some fighters were paid to lose.

Others were pressured into fighting injured.

Emily discovered it because Dustin had asked her to help with his taxes.

She found unexplained deposits.

Then messages.

Then a hidden folder on his laptop.

Miller’s expression darkened.

“What did you do?”

“I copied it.”

“Where?”

She looked at him.

“That’s why he hit me.”

Miller’s entire body went still.

“He knew?”

“He caught me.”

“How badly did he hurt you before you got away?”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t get away.”

Miller stopped breathing.

“My neighbor came home early and heard me.”

“Where’s the copy?”

Emily whispered:

“I mailed it to myself.”

“Password?”

She told him.

Miller opened the cloud folder on his phone.

There were videos.

Betting sheets.

Payment records.

And one clip labeled:

RAY — CLEANUP.

Miller pressed play.

Coach Nolan’s voice came through clearly.

“If somebody talks, Dustin handles it.”

Miller looked at his daughter.

“That somebody was you.”

Emily nodded.

Then she whispered:

“There’s more.”

👉 One of the videos showed Dustin beating a fighter who had refused to throw a match—and Coach Nolan ordering everyone to say the man had slipped in the locker room.

Chapter 3 - The Fighter Who Disappeared

His name was Tyler Grant.

Twenty-three.

Amateur lightweight.

According to the gym’s social media, Tyler had “left the team for personal reasons” six months earlier.

Emily’s files told a different story.

The video began in the locker room.

Tyler stood against a bench.

Bloody nose.

Shaking.

Coach Nolan’s voice:

“You cost us forty grand.”

Tyler answered:

“I’m not taking a dive.”
