CHAPTER 1 — THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR
Daniel Brooks had learned to ignore most HOA letters. A crooked trash bin, a garden light, a basketball hoop supposedly too close to the sidewalk—there was always something.
But at 7:14 on a Tuesday evening, the pounding at his front door was different.
Daniel looked through the window. Two police cruisers stood outside.
He opened the door halfway.
“Can I help you?”
“We received a complaint regarding this property,” an officer said.
“What kind of complaint?”
“An alleged violation involving an unauthorized alteration and a disturbance with a neighbor.”
“Who called?”
“Your HOA.”
Daniel stepped onto the porch. Then the front door behind him opened.
His wife, Rachel, appeared in a crisp police uniform, her badge shining beneath the porch light.
“Evening, gentlemen.”
The officers froze.
The older officer swallowed. “Ma'am…”
Rachel glanced at the cruisers. “Why are you at my home?”
Nobody answered immediately.
“We were told the homeowner was refusing to comply with an HOA order,” the officer finally said.
Rachel looked at Daniel, then back at the officers.
“That's interesting.”
Because she knew exactly what the HOA had done—and she knew the story they had been given was missing something important.
CHAPTER 2 — THE HOA'S STORY
The HOA president, Patricia Sloan, had been telling neighbors that Daniel was deliberately violating community rules.
According to her, he had installed an unauthorized structure in the backyard, ignored repeated notices, and become hostile when asked to correct it.
The truth was much simpler.
Daniel had repaired an old fence damaged during a storm. He had replaced three boards. That was all.
Patricia insisted the repair changed the property's appearance.
