Rachel examined the folder.

“That document is dated before the board meeting that supposedly authorized it.”

The attorney paused.

The HOA treasurer projected the original electronic file.

Its metadata showed that the document had been created by the compliance consultant—not the HOA—and two days before the board meeting.

Then another file appeared.

An email from Patricia to the consultant read:

“Make it look official enough that the homeowner understands this is no longer optional.”

Nobody spoke.

Patricia's face went pale.

A county investigator stood from the back of the room.

“We've been reviewing these records for several weeks.”

He explained that the new evidence answered several questions about the HOA's conduct.

The meeting was suspended.

The investigation continued.

And Daniel's fence remained exactly where it was.

CHAPTER 8 — THE HOUSE WAS STILL THEIRS

Months later, the HOA had a new board.

The consultant was gone. The enforcement system had been rewritten. Police were no longer being called over ordinary HOA disputes.

Daniel repaired the last section of his fence.

Rachel watched from the porch.

“You know,” she said, “this started because of three boards.”

Daniel smiled.

“Three boards and a very determined woman.”

Their neighbors slowly returned to normal life.

One evening, Officer Harris stopped by.

He looked at the repaired fence.
