“That structure violates the neighborhood's architectural standards,” she declared.
Daniel replied, “Show me the rule.”
Patricia opened her folder.
“It is right here.”
Rachel stepped closer and read the page.
“This doesn't say what you think it says.”
Patricia's expression hardened.
“You're not the HOA president.”
“No,” Rachel said. “I'm the homeowner.”
Patricia turned toward the officers.
“She is obstructing enforcement.”
Rachel almost laughed.
“Enforcement of what?”
Silence.
Officer Harris looked at the document.
“Mrs. Sloan, this appears to be an HOA compliance notice.”
“Exactly.”
“It's not a police order.”
Patricia's face reddened.
Daniel finally understood. She had not called the police because a crime had occurred. She had called because she wanted uniforms standing on his porch.
Rachel looked at the officers.
“Thank you for coming. But if there is no criminal allegation and no court order, this belongs in the civil process.”
Officer Harris nodded.
Patricia stepped forward.
“You can't hide behind your wife's badge.”
Daniel looked at her.
“We're not.”
